Program Overview

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology offers opportunities for original research in the areas of molecular and applied microbiology, biotechnology, cell and developmental biology, epigenetics, geomicrobiology, molecular biology, molecular genetics, molecular immunology, microbial ecology, microbial pathogenesis, and virology. The Department has excellent research funding and a commitment to high quality research. A list of faculty and associate members and their research interests is available from the Department.

Students must satisfy the admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. International students are required to submit an English proficiency exam such as the TOEFL or IELTS.

Doctor of Philosophy

Admission Requirements

Students admitted to the Ph.D. degree program normally possess a master's degree in microbiology or a related area, with clear evidence of research ability or potential. Transfer from the master's to the Ph.D. program is permitted under regulations set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Exceptional students may be admitted directly to the Ph.D. program from the bachelor's level.

Program Requirements

During their first year, students entering with a B.Sc. will be required to complete 12 credits of coursework with a first class standing, including 6 credits of Microbiological and Immunological Research (MICB_V 506). Students entering the Ph.D. program with an advanced degree (such as an M.Sc.) will be required to take 3 credits of MICB_V 506 within the first year in the program. Other course requirements will be at the discretion of the dissertation supervisory committee. A maximum of 6 credits may be taken as 300- or 400-level courses. All doctoral students are required to successfully complete a comprehensive examination within 18 months of starting their program. The major requirement for the Ph.D. is completion of a research dissertation meeting the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies requirements.

Master of Science

Admission Requirements

Students admitted to the M.Sc. degree program normally possess a bachelor's degree in microbiology or related area, and must meet the general admission requirements for master's degree programs set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Program Requirements

Students must complete a total of 12 credits of coursework, including Microbiological and Immunological Research (MICB_V 506, 6-credit version) which will be taken in the first year of the program. In addition, the student must perform research work under a research supervisor and write and defend the 18-credit MICB_V 549 thesis based on this research.
