Fields of research include: acoustics; aerodynamics and fluid mechanics; automatic controls; robotics and industrial automation; energy conversion, combustion, thermodynamics and heat transfer; vibrations and space dynamics; solid mechanics; bioengineering and biomechanics; design and manufacturing processes; industrial engineering, fuel cells, micro-electromechanical systems, mechatronics, and CAD; and naval architecture. Applicants for graduate degrees may be considered for appointment as research assistants, teaching assistants, or markers in the Department. Courses are selected in consultation with faculty. Not all courses listed in Course Descriptions are offered every year.
Doctor of Philosophy
Applicants admitted to the Ph.D. degree program normally possess a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related area, with clear evidence of research ability or potential. Exceptional applicants may be admitted directly to the Ph.D. program from the bachelor's level, subject to the UBC Senate’s doctoral program requirements.
In their second year of the M.A.Sc. program, promising students may be considered for early transfer into the Ph.D. program under regulations set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Applicants must satisfy English language competency requirements.
Requirements for the Ph.D. include satisfactory completion of a minimum of 33 credits of courses beyond the bachelor's level, original research under the supervision of a faculty member, and a thesis. Where appropriate, the student's supervisory committee can require the completion of additional courses. A typical completion time for a Ph.D. is four to five years. Students holding a master's degree from another institution will have the course requirements for the Ph.D. assessed on an individual basis. All doctoral students are required to complete a comprehensive examination successfully. The major requirement for the Ph.D. is completion of a research thesis meeting the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies requirements.
Master of Applied Science
Students admitted to the M.A.Sc. program will normally possess a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, or a related area, with a minimum average of 76%-79%.

The Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) is a graduate-level study program that includes a research investigation and the writing of a thesis. Requirements for the M.A.Sc. include satisfactory completion of 30 credits of graduate-level courses (up to 6 credits may be at the undergraduate level in courses numbered 300 to 499), original research under the supervision of a faculty member, and a thesis. The thesis is assigned 6 to 12 credits and is counted as part of the coursework requirement. A typical completion time for the M.A.Sc. is 24 months. Subject to satisfactory progress and acceptance by a faculty supervisor, a successful M.A.Sc. graduate may transfer to a course of studies leading to the Ph.D.
