Program Overview

 

The Department of Materials Engineering offers opportunities for study in the following fields: casting and solidification of metals; ceramic processing and properties; refractories; corrosion; composites; high temperature coatings; biomaterials; extractive metallurgy including hydrometallurgy, bio-hydrometallurgy, electrometallurgy, and pyrometallurgy; physical metallurgy; thermo-mechanical processing related to materials production; environmental issues related to materials productions; electronic materials; nanofibers; textile structural composites.

 

Materials Engineers are experts on the entire life cycle of materials, including recovery of materials from minerals, making engineered materials, manufacturing materials into products, understanding and evaluating materials performance, proper disposal and recycling of materials, and evaluating societal and economic benefits.

 

Students must satisfy the admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies including, for international students whose first language is not English, a minimum TOEFL score of 90.

Doctor of Philosophy

 

Admission Requirements

 

An M.Sc. or M.A.Sc. in a suitable discipline is prerequisite. Outstanding M.A.Sc. and M.Sc. students who have demonstrated clear evidence of research ability may be transferred to a Ph.D. program after one year's residence at UBC, subject to Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies regulations.

 

Program Requirements

 

As detailed in the Academic Regulations of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, all doctoral students are required to successfully complete a comprehensive examination. The major requirement for the Ph.D. is completion of a research dissertation meeting the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies requirements. Master of Science

 

Admission Requirements

 

Graduation in physics, chemistry, or mathematics with at least upper-second class standing is prerequisite for admission to the program leading to the M.Sc.

As detailed by the Academic Regulations of Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, and as per Materials Engineering guidelines.

 

Master of Applied Science

 

Admission Requirements

 

Graduation in materials engineering, metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or engineering physics, with at least upper-Second class standing (76%) is prerequisite for admission to the program leading to the M.A.Sc.
