Doctor of Philosophy
The Faculty of Dentistry offers advanced study leading to the Ph.D. in Craniofacial Science through one of the following areas of study:
- Research in Population Health will explore the complex interactions (social, cultural, environmental) that affect the oral health of individuals, communities, and populations.
- Oral health-related clinical research includes both interventional and observational studies focusing on the following: disease prevention, diagnosis, risk, treatment, prognosis, and health care.
- Basic science research in the areas of biomaterials, cell biology, developmental biology, microbiology, and molecular biology is available.
Applicants must meet minimum admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Fluency in English is required. The minimum TOEFL score requirement for graduates from a country where English is not the primary language is 580 (paper-based) and 93 (internet-based).
Students will normally take DENT_V 540 (Research Methods) during their first year.
In addition, students will be required to pass a comprehensive examination. The program will be open to those who have completed a D.D.S., D.M.D., M.D., D.V.M., or their equivalents, or an M.Sc.

Master of Science

Completion of the M.Sc. program requires a minimum of 12 credits of coursework in addition to the 18-credit thesis course (DENT_V 599). A minimum of 9 credits must be at the 500-699 level, and a maximum of 3 credits can be at the 300- or 400-level. Students will normally take DENT_V 540 (Research Methods) and DENT_V 542 (Oral Cell Biology & Biochemistry). The program will usually require two full academic years; however, an extended program of part-time M.Sc. studies is available.

Combined Ph.D. in Craniofacial Science/Diploma in Endodontics
This combined program option is a clinical specialty program that is offered in conjunction with a Ph.D. in Craniofacial Science. The program provides education and training for potential clinicians, research workers, and teachers. Completion of the Diploma in Endodontics requires completion of the clinical and didactic requirements associated with the diploma program in the Faculty of Dentistry, and successful completion of the Ph.D. in Craniofacial Science course requirements, and successful defense and submission of their dissertation to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. In this program option, the degree and the diploma are awarded conjointly and both must be completed to graduate. The combined program will require a minimum of six years to prepare the student for clinical practice and a teaching/research career. Graduates will be eligible to take the examination for specialty certification in endodontics offered by The Royal College of Dentists of Canada and The American Board of Endodontics.
Applicants to the program must satisfy the requirements for admission to the Faculties of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Dentistry. Applicants must hold a Doctor of Dental Surgery or Dental Medicine or equivalent from a recognized university. Applicants for the Ph.D. degree must hold a D.D.S., D.M.D., M.D., or D.V.M., or equivalent, or an M.Sc. in dental science or a related discipline. Students entering directly with a D.D.S., D.M.D., or international equivalent without a Master's degree must, during the first year of study, complete 12 credits with a first-class average of which at least nine credits must be at the 500-level or above and at least nine credits must be no less than A- (at UBC, 80%), to maintain registration as a doctoral student. Combined M.Sc. in Craniofacial Science/Diploma in Endodontics
This program is a clinical specialty program that allows students to complete the M.Sc. in Craniofacial Science combined with clinical specialty preparation through the Diploma in Endodontics. The program provides education and training for potential clinicians, research workers, and teachers. Completion of the Diploma in Endodontics requires successful completion of the clinical and didactic requirements associated with the diploma program in the Faculty of Dentistry, successful completion of the M.Sc. in Craniofacial Science course requirements, and successful defense and submission of an 18-credit research thesis to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
In this program option, the degree and diploma are awarded conjointly and both must be completed to graduate. Graduates will be eligible to take the examinations for specialty certification in endodontics of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and the American Board of Endodontics. The normal course of study is three full academic years.

Certificate in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology
The Faculty of Dentistry offers a Certificate in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology. The program consists of a three to four-year hospital-based residency in one of three pathways: Oral Medicine; Oral Pathology, or both the specialties. All programs lead to a certificate and eligibility to take the Royal College of Dentists (Canada) Fellowship examinations. Residents wishing to have dual certification in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology will require four years of training.
Applicants must have a dental degree from a recognized dental school. Admission requirements include at least five years of prior, full-time education in English in Canada (or the equivalent in another country). Alternatively, a score of at least 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required.
