The Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies offers programs in Spanish leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and programs in Hispanic Studies leading to the degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy.

Major in Spanish

Lower-Level Requirements

Prior to registration in SPAN courses, students are encouraged to review the Spanish Placement Guidelines available at https://fhis.ubc.ca/undergraduate/advising/placement-in-language-courses/ and take the Language Placement Questionnaire to determine their entry level. 

15 credits* of required courses:

  • 6 credits of SPAN 101 and 102, or 3 credits of SPAN 103
  • 6 credits of SPAN 201 and 202, or 3 credits of SPAN 203
  • 3 credits of SPAN 221  

* The required number of lower-level credits will change if a student demonstrates the required proficiency level via a placement test or chooses to take the intensive courses SPAN 103 and 203, which are designed for students with prior experience in Spanish or other Romance languages. Students must take either SPAN 101 and 102 (6 credits total) or SPAN 103 (3 credits intensive), and SPAN 201 and 202 (6 credits total) or SPAN 203 (3 credit intensive).   

Upper-Level Requirements

  • 18 credits of required courses:  SPAN 301, 302, 357, 358, 364, 365
  • 12 credits chosen from SPAN 321, 322, 395, 401-495

Minor in Spanish

Lower-Level Requirements
