The Department of Theatre and Film offers the Diploma in Film Production consisting of two years of concentrated study, with an option to do an additional year.
In this program, students learn the techniques, practices, and theory of filmmaking. There are options to study more deeply in the areas of documentary filmmaking, alternative cinema, and screenwriting.
Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree.
The number of available places is strictly limited: application and submission of supporting materials is required. Preference will be given to students with strong evidence of creative ability. Prospective applicants should consult the Film Program for admission requirements, application deadline, and current course offerings.
All students enrolled in the Diploma in Film Production program will be reviewed annually to determine whether they should continue in their course of study.
Diploma Requirements
The program will normally take two years of study however students may elect to take three years to access a greater range of courses. 60 credits of coursework are required as follows:
First Year
Required courses are CINE_V 100, FIPR_V 230, 233, 234, CRWR_V 206, 207, and 6 credits from CINE_V courses at the 200-level or higher.
Second Year
Required courses are FIPR_V 333, 337, plus 15 credits from FIPR_V 330, 399, 434, 435, 436, 437, and 439 and at least 6 Cinema Studies credits chosen from CINE_V 300, 331, 332, 334, 336, 338, 430, 432, 434, 436, 438; ASIA_V 354, 355, 356; ITST_V 432; MUSC_V 345; SCAN_V 411; SLAV_V 307; SPAN_V 404; THTR_V 443.
Additional courses may be approved on a year-to-year basis.
Third Year
Students have an option to complete 9 of their 15 FIPR_V elective credits by taking FIPR_V 433 in a third year.
Additional courses may be approved on a year-to-year basis.
A minimum of 60 credits are required for the Diploma, at least 30 of which must be 300-level or above. Students must achieve a minimum grade average of 67% for these 60 credits.
It is highly recommended that students complete at least 12 credits in Fine and Performing Arts outside of the main curriculum.

Screenwriting Option
Diploma students wishing to specialize in screenwriting may apply via portfolio to complete 6-12 additional credits in CRWR_V 406, 409 and 414.
