BCIA is a regulatory body which establishes standards for the competent and ethical practice of agrology in BC (www.bcia.com) under the Professional Governance Act. Through effective professional self-regulation, BCIA and its registrants shall be consistently regarded by the people of British Columbia as upholding and protecting the public interest. Agrology is a broad multidisciplinary field that encompasses the natural, economic and social sciences as related to the practice and understanding of agriculture and natural sciences.
Some graduates of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems may be eligible to apply for registration with the BCIA (see eligible Areas of Practice https://www.bcia.com/about-us/bcia-agrologists/practice-areas).
A graduate who plans to practice as an agrologist (either as a PAg or TAg) in the province of British Columbia is expected to apply as a registrant of the BCIA and complete an Articling Program. BCIA also has an option for student membership.
College of Applied Biology (CAB)
In British Columbia, applied biology is regulated by the College of Applied Biology (https://www.cab-bc.org/) under the Professional Governance Act.
A graduate who plans to practice as an applied biologist in British Columbia is expected to register as a member of CAB. New graduates should apply as a Biologist in Training (BIT) until they meet the work experience and other criteria suitable for Registered Professional Biologist. As well, CAB also has registration categories for Registered Biology Technologist (RBTech) and Applied Biology Technician (ABT). CAB also has an option for student membership.
