Law Society of British Columbia

The possession of a Juris Doctor does not in itself confer the right to practise law in British Columbia. Admission to the Bar of the Province of British Columbia is governed by the Legal Profession Act and the regulations of the Law Society of British Columbia. An applicant for admission to the Bar must comply with the requirements of the Law Society as to academic standing, professional training, and ethical standards. These requirements presently include an Admission Program of approximately one year, during which the applicant must serve as an articled student with a practising member of the Bar and complete a training course and qualifying examinations. Information may be obtained from the Law Society of British Columbia.

Applicants who intend to practise law in other jurisdictions must obtain information concerning the requirements for entry to the profession, from the governing body of the legal profession in those jurisdictions.

Possession of a criminal record may prevent admission to the Bar. Applicants must consult the appropriate Law Society.
