Midwifery Website
The Midwifery Program prepares students to become Registered Midwives, provide primary care for women and their families through pregnancy and up to the third month after birth. Midwives, although independent practitioners, work as part of the health care team. The four-year undergraduate program combines broad-based knowledge and understanding in the humanities, and the social and bio-medical sciences.
Distributed Option in Midwifery Education
Students who live outside of the lower mainland have the option to stay in their home community for Year 1 as members of the Distributed Option in Midwifery Education (DOME). Students will be required to travel to Vancouver twice in Term 1 to attend orientation and introduction to skills training.
DOME students will have the option to complete the remainder of Year 1’s required class work from their home community if they choose. For those uncomfortable with online learning, they also have the option to decline and attend classes in-person for Year 1.
Midwifery Program Cohorts
All students offered a seat in the program will be allocated to 1 of 3 cohorts upon admission – Vancouver, Fraser Health or Vancouver Island. Students identified for the Vancouver Cohort will attend skills training and classes held in Vancouver, BC. Students identified for the Vancouver Island Cohort will attend skills training and classes in Victoria, BC, and students identified for the Fraser Health Cohort will attend skills training and classes in Surrey, BC. Classrooms are provided at each site with classes additionally broadcast by teleconferencing for students attending clinical placements at a distance. Admissions, academic progression, academic regulations, degree requirements, and costs are the same regardless of cohort location.
Applicants will have the opportunity to indicate their site preferences at the time of interview. Applicants will be asked for their sites of first, second, third, and fourth preference (or no preference, if applicable).
Members of the Admissions Selection Committee are not aware of an applicant’s site preference during the selection process. Following an admissions decision, applicants offered admission are allocated to sites based on their preferences. However, it is not always possible to allocate all successful applicants to their site of first preference.
Students who select the DOME option for Year 1 will be identified for one of the three cohorts based on available space at each site and geographical location of the student. The DOME cohort students will then attend skills training and classes in-person starting in Year 2 outside of the required 2 in-person sessions that are scheduled in Year 1.
Successful applicants will be assigned to a cohort in their offer letter. Once assigned to a cohort, a student is not allowed to change cohorts during the time of their study with the Program.
Further information about program delivery and location for each cohort may be found on the Midwifery program’s admissions website.
