Academic Regulations

Students in all years are normally subject to general academic regulations in addition to others identified by the School.

Academic Standing

Academic standing evaluations are completed at the conclusion of each Winter Session (in May of each year).

The three types of Academic Standing are as follows:

A. In Good Standing

Students will be placed In Good Standing when they achieve a sessional average of 55% or greater.

B. On Academic Probation

Students will be placed On Academic Probation when they achieve a sessional average of at least 50% and less than 55%.

C. Failed, Required to Withdraw

Students will be assigned Failed, Required to Withdraw when one of the following conditions is met:

  • Their sessional average falls below 50% or;
  • If a student’s previous standing was On Academic Probation; Failed, Permitted to Continue; or Failed, Required to Withdraw, and their current sessional average is between 50% and 55%, then their new standing will be Failed, Required to Withdraw.

Students assigned Failed, Required to Withdraw will be provided the opportunity to appeal this decision. Students whose appeal is successful will have their academic standing updated to Failed, permitted to Continue.

Students assigned Failed, Required to Withdraw will be required to withdraw from the School for a period of at least one academic year, after which an application for readmission may be considered.

Additional Period Honours

In addition to reviewing Academic Standing at the conclusion of each Winter Session, students may also be eligible for additional recognition for their academic performance. Additional Period Honours refers to designations awarded to students to recognize excellent academic performance in each Winter session. Courses taken during the Summer Session are not included in this assessment.

The two types of Additional Period Honours are as follows:

A. Dean’s Scholar Standing
Students will receive Dean’s Scholar Standing when they achieve a sessional average of at least 90% on a minimum of 27 credits in the Winter Session.

B. Dean’s List
Students will receive Dean’s List when they achieve a sessional average of at least 85% and less than 90% on a minimum of 27 credits in the Winter Session.

Class Standing

Class Standing is reviewed on an ongoing basis. Students will be assigned class standing based on the following criteria:

Class StandingTotal Credits Completed
1Fewer than 24 credits
2Minimum of 24 credits
3Minimum of 48 credits
4Minimum of 78 credits

Graduation Standing

The categories of degree are Class 1 (80-100%), Class 2 (65-79%), and Pass (50-64%). For students enrolled prior to 2004, the calculation is based on the best 60 credits of 300-/400-level work, whereas for students enrolled in 2004 and later the calculation is based on the best 36 credits of 300-/400-level credits.

Supplemental Examinations

Supplemental examinations are not granted for kinesiology courses.

Repeating Courses

Students may normally repeat a failed Kinesiology course only once. If students need to take a course for a third time, they must get permission from the Associate Director, Undergraduate Affairs. Students that have passed a course will not be permitted to register in a course for a second time. Students that wish to take a course for higher standing must also request permission to take a course for a second time. Appeals for second attempts will only be considered if space is available in the section at the start of the term. Please note that space in a course does not guarantee that the appeal for a second attempt will be granted. Students needing permission to repeat a course should consult with Kinesiology Advising on how to seek permission on repeating courses.
