Program Overview
The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering offers graduate programs leading to research degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.). Thesis and dissertation topics are available in the fields of faculty research.
Collaborative research at the master's and doctoral levels is conducted with many of the world’s leading research institutes, including UBC partner units such as the Michael Smith Laboratories, Bioenergy Research Demonstration Facility, Clean Energy Research Centre, BioProducts Institute and Pulp & Paper Centre. These collaborations support joint initiatives in areas of shared interest.
CHBE faculty-led focuses on developing innovative and sustainable solutions to pressing local and global challenges facing industry and society. Faculty members are engaged in research across the following broad areas:
- Biotechnology
- Chemical Process Engineering
- Energy and Materials
- Environmental Engineering
Graduates from other branches of engineering or from science may also be admitted. However, they may be required to successfully complete selected undergraduate or graduate courses in chemical and biological engineering before receiving a degree. Doctor of Philosophy
Admission Requirements
Students admitted to the Ph.D. degree program normally possess an M.A.Sc. degree in chemical engineering or a related area, with clear evidence of research ability or potential. Transfer from the master's to the Ph.D. program is permitted under regulations set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Exceptional students may be admitted directly to the doctoral program from the bachelor's level, with approval from the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Program Requirements
All doctoral students must successfully complete a comprehensive examination. The principle requirement for the Ph.D. degree is completion of a research dissertation that meets the requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
The Ph.D. is for outstanding students who wish to acquire the knowledge, techniques, and skills required for advanced research. The program consists of a dissertation, at least 6 credits of coursework appropriate to the student's research interests, the seminar course CHBE_V 698, and a proposal preparation course CHBE_V 697 for a total of 9 credits of coursework.
Master of Applied Science
Admission Requirements
Students admitted to the M.A.Sc. degree program normally hold a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline, and must meet the general admission requirements for master's degree programs set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Program Requirements
The M.A.Sc. requires completion of a 12-credit thesis and 18 credits of coursework, including the seminar course CHBE_V 598 and the proposal preparation course CHBE_V 597. Normally, the required 18 credits include 6 credits of fundamental graduate courses in Chemical and Biological Engineering and 6 credits of additional graduate-level coursework. The remaining 6 credits can be other graduate or undergraduate 300 and/or 400 level courses. Part-time students may enrol in the M.A.Sc. program.
Master of Science
Admission Requirements
Students admitted to the M.Sc. degree program normally possess a bachelor's degree in areas such as agriculture, forestry, chemistry, or a related scientific discipline, and must meet the general admission requirements for master's degree programs set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

The M.Sc. requires completion of a 12-credit thesis and 18 credits of coursework, including the seminar course CHBE_V 598 and the proposal preparation course CHBE_V 597.
