The Graduate Certificate in Mechanical Engineering is a 12-credit certificate designed for new graduates, professional engineers, and engineers-in-training. The program is designed to be adaptable and flexible for a variety of students as it could be completed in either four months full-time or up to 24 months part-time.
Students select twelve credits of coursework in Mechanical Engineering, and participate in on-campus, in-person learning. By learning alongside other UBC Engineering graduate students, students are immersed in the academic environment and are able to enrich their learning through participation in the Department community.
Students who successfully complete courses to satisfy the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Mechanical Engineering and are admitted to the M.A.Sc. or M.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering may request to ladder up to 12 of the certificate credits toward the requirements for the master’s program, as per the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies’ academic regulation on laddered credits.
Note: A Graduate Certificate in Mechanical Engineering alone does not form an acceptable basis for application to associations of professional engineers in Canada.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for admission to a UBC graduate certificate program. Applicants are required to have bachelor’s degree level training in mechanical engineering. Applicants with degrees in other fields may be approved on a case-by-case basis.

Program Requirements
The certificate requires completion of 12 credits of MECH_V courses. At least 6 credits must be at the 500-level. A maximum of 6 credits may be taken at the 300-/400- level, with approval from the Department.
Students must remain continuously registered in graduate certificate courses until the program requirements have been satisfied. Students seeking to take an informal break from their studies must discuss their intentions with the graduate program office in advance. Failure to register for two consecutive terms may result in the student being required to withdraw.
