The Graduate Certificate in Marine Vessel Design is a 12-credit graduate certificate designed for those who have background in naval architecture and marine engineering but wish to enhance their knowledge of marine vessel design. Completed in 4 months full-time or 8 months part-time, the certificate includes Capstone Ship Design and three of six technical subjects. The technical subjects are selected in conjunction with the program director.
By learning alongside current masters students, students are immersed in the BC context, with examples, applications, and case studies that are relevant to those who will be working in our province.
Students who successfully complete courses to satisfy the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Marine Vessel Design and are admitted to the M.Eng. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering may request to ladder up to 12 of the certificate credits toward the requirements for the master’s program, as per the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies’ academic regulation on laddered credits.
Note: A Graduate Certificate in Marine Vessel Design alone does not form an acceptable basis for application to associations of professional engineers in Canada.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for admission to a UBC graduate certificate program. Applicants are required to have bachelor’s degree level training in naval architecture and marine engineering or a substantially similar subject. Applicants with degrees in other fields may be approved on a case-by-case basis.

Program Requirements
Students must successfully complete 12 credits: NAME_V 591 (3) Computer-Aided Ship Design and 9 credits of electives to be selected from an approved list in consultation with the Program Director.
Students must remain continuously registered in graduate certificate courses until the program requirements have been satisfied. Students seeking to take an informal break from their studies must discuss their intentions with the graduate program office in advance. Failure to register for two consecutive terms may result in the student being required to withdraw.
