Under section 27.1 of the University Act, a student society has the authority to establish and approve student fees by referendum. The University is required to collect these fees on behalf of the student society, but does not approve these fees or determine the amount of these fees.
The following fees have been approved by the UBC Vancouver student societies, the Alma Mater Society (AMS) and the Graduate Student Society (GSS).
General Student Fees Established and Approved by a Student Society
Active Members
Active Members are students enrolled in in-person or hybrid courses who have full access to on-campus services, facilities, and student society. These members are assessed the full range of AMS student fees.
Online-only Active Members
Online-only Active Members are students registered exclusively in courses delivered in an online format. These members are assessed a reduced set of AMS student fees.
Incoming Exchange, Visiting Graduate, or UBC Okanagan Campus Students
The following members are assessed a reduced set of AMS student fees.
- Students participating in exchange programs from institutions abroad who are not assessed tuition at UBC Vancouver.
- International students visiting UBC to conduct research who are not charged UBC tuition.
- Students from UBC Okanagan attending UBC Vancouver for one term or more while continuing to pay student fees at UBC Okanagan.

1 AMS/GSS Health and Dental Insurance provides coverage for expenses such as most prescription drugs, travel health insurance, vision, and dental care, in addition to basic medical covered by MSP. The fee is assessed only in the Winter Session and provides coverage from September 1 to August 31. Students beginning their studies in January will be assessed $264.27 and will be covered from January 1 to August 31. 3 The U-Pass provides all zone unlimited access to public transit, and is charged to eligible students enrolled in the Winter and Summer Sessions and who are members of the AMS. 4 This fee is assessed to all students in Winter Session who are registered in the final year of a course leading to a bachelor’s degree, the M.D., the D.M.D., the J.D., or the B.Ed., and who have not previously paid the fee. This fee is for the support of student-sponsored graduating class activities. This fee is tax deductible and will be included in the T2202A tax receipt. |
Student Society Fees
Tuition fees are reviewed annually by the Board of Governors. In recent years, tuition increases have been 2% for continuing domestic students and between 2% and 5% for continuing international students.
