Health and medicine

The field of health and medicine is broad and encompasses a vast number of professions and specialized skill sets. Underlying many of these professions is a common desire to improve the lives of others by improving accessibility, safety and efficiency of care. 

Our health and medicine courses and programs are offered in a variety of topics and learning pathways to suit a range of interests, experience levels and goals. Gain an understanding of health administration through an Indigenous lens, increase your data literacy for roles in the health sector, learn how to communicate complex medical content visually or develop the knowledge and skills to oversee regulatory compliance of health products. 

  • Health analytics  
    Developed with health data science experts, our offering provides foundational knowledge of health analytics and hands-on training using real-world health data. Whether you are interested in upskilling or reskilling, you can expect to come away with the confidence and tools to apply and realize the potential of data analytics in your own work.
     
  • Healthcare financial management
    The School of Population and Public Health in the UBC Faculty of Medicine developing a healthcare accounting program specifically designed for public, non-profit health care contexts. It will equip non-accountants working in the Canadian and other public healthcare systems with fundamental financial skills including forecasting, budgeting, reporting and analyzing and interpreting financial data. Participants will come away with the knowledge and confidence to make informed financial decisions and lead their teams effectively, ensuring prudent resource allocation and improved patient care.
     
  • Indigenous health administration and leadership  
    The UBC Extended Learning Certificate in Indigenous Health Administration and Leadership is designed to support Indigenous organizations and communities to build strengths-based, holistic programming that promotes health and wellbeing.  This program is offered in partnership with the UBC Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health and UBC Extended Learning. 
     
  • Life sciences
    Developed by the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering, our offering delivers the practical, legal and strategic knowledge required to drive innovation in the life sciences, healthcare, biotechnology, biomanufacturing and pharmaceutical industries. Centered around instruction from industry experts and real-world case studies, our courses and programs prepare learners with in-demand, market-relevant skills to foster meaningful innovations in the life sciences.
     
  • Occupational health and safety
    Whether you are new to the field or a seasoned professional looking to brush up on your knowledge, you will develop leadership skills and gain the tools necessary to integrate occupational health and safety practices effectively, manage environmental hygiene aspects and drive positive change.
     
  • Regulatory affairs  
    British Columbia has one of the fastest growing life sciences sectors in the country. Hindering this growth, however, is the lack of workers with expertise and training in regulatory affairs. Regulatory affairs professionals play a critical role in bringing health products to market, and those skilled in interpreting and administering complex health laws and regulations are in demand. Gain a well-rounded, foundational understanding of Canadian and global regulatory systems, processes and stakeholders.
     
  • Science communication  
    Science communication is about taking complex science, health and medical ideas, and creating accurate and effective communications that inform, educate and engage audiences.  Learn how to create accurate science, health and medical communications with educators and pioneers in biomedical visualization and communication, interactive design, human-centered design, medicine, graphic and visual arts, and other specialties.
