American Sign Language

Learning American Sign Language is an important way to learn about the richness of Deaf and Signing cultures. Students in our ASL_V courses may work closely with members of the Deaf or hard of hearing community, or they may also be learning ASL to be more inclusive of Deaf perspectives and culture in their life and community.

Our Deaf instructors teach you American Sign Language (ASL), a complete visual language with distinct grammar and sentence structures that’s signed by half a million Deaf and hard of hearing people. Understand how to use your hands, body, facial expressions and movement to communicate. In our Deaf-centric signing-only classes, no English is spoken. Our Deaf and DeafBlind instructors use ASL, gestures, facial expressions, slides, and occasional written English to help you learn ASL.

ASL_V courses are offered fully online in virtual classes, or evenings and weekends at UBC Robson Square in downtown Vancouver. In the summer, we offer full-time and intensive programs in ASL.
