  1. NORD_V 332 (3-6) Nordic Studies in Focus

    Topics that respond to current events and emerging research in Nordic cultural studies. Find out which special topic will be explored in the current or coming year at https://cenes.ubc.ca/courses. A maximum of 6 credits will be granted for SCAN 332 or NORD 332.

  2. NORD_V 333 (3) Nordic Literary Cultures

    Contemporary and historical Nordic literatures that reflect the major societal, political and cultural aspects of the circumpolar North. Credit will be granted for only one of SCAN 333 or NORD 333. Equivalency: SCAN 333.

  3. NORD_V 334 (3) Nordic Contemporary Fiction

    Explore Nordic societies through recent literature translated from Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Sámi languages, Icelandic, and other Nordic languages. Credit will be granted for only one of SCAN 334 or NORD 334. Equivalency: SCAN 334.

  4. NORD_V 336 (3) Nordic Crime Fiction, Film and Television

    Explore Nordic crime stories as a mirror and critique of their societies. Credit will be granted for only one of SCAN 336 or NORD 336. Equivalency: SCAN 336.

  5. NORD_V 337 (3) Nordic Cinema

    Examine the technical, narrative, and aesthetic features of Northern European films. Credit will be granted for only one of SCAN 337 or NORD 337. Equivalency: SCAN 337.

  6. NORD_V 338 (3) The Viking World

    Wars, migrations and settlements of the Viking Age (800-1100) as seen through the Icelandic sagas, and the afterlife of the Viking world in modern culture.

  7. NORD_V 339 (3) Norse Mythology

    The pagan mythology of pre-Christian Scandinavia and its later appropriations and recycling.

  8. NORD_V 340 (3) Sámi Histories and Cultures

    Cultural history of the Sámi peoples, the Indigenous peoples of northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russias Kola Peninsula. Focus on traditional culture, colonization, and decolonization.

  9. NORD_V 341 (3) Indigenous Activism

    Examination of contemporary political and social conflicts in the circumpolar north, focusing on ways Indigenous people have used art, performance and activism as a tool for resistance and decolonization. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

  10. NORD_V 411 (3) Nordic Drama and Film

    Examine the origins of Nordic drama and film and their influences on these art forms worldwide. Credit will be granted for only one of SCAN 411 or NORD 411. Equivalency: SCAN 411.

  11. NORD_V 412 (3) Epics of Northern Europe

    Explore epics of Northern Europe, their connections to nationalism, and their re-imaginings in contemporary Nordic literature. Credit will be granted for only one of SCAN 412 or NORD 412. Equivalency: SCAN 412.

  12. NORD_V 413 (3) Baltic Cultures and Literatures

    Examination through literature of the historical, cultural, and ethnic elements that have made the Baltic area (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) the crossroads of northeastern Europe. Credit will be granted for only one of SCAN 413 or NORD 413. Equivalency: SCAN 413.

  13. NORD_V 414 (3) Topics in Northern European Cultural Studies

    Selected topics for advanced study, such as activism, ethnicity, gender, identity, migration, sexuality, and justice across Northern Europe. Credit will be granted for only one of SCAN 414 or NORD 414. Equivalency: SCAN 414.

  14. NORD_V 415 (3) The World of the Sagas

    Explore the medieval and early modern world of the Nordic region through the Icelandic sagas and their literary, cultural, and historical context. Credit will be granted for only one of SCAN 415 or NORD 415. Equivalency: SCAN 415.
