KORN_V: Korean

For each academic session (W and S), prior to registration in any KORN_V course, students are required to complete the Korean Placement Interview. For more information, please visit http://asia.ubc.ca/undergraduate/placement-tests/. Note: Students must obtain a minimum grade of 60% to advance to the next level of language. This applies to all students in KORN_V language courses, not just language majors.


  1. KORN_V 100 (3) Basic Korean I

    An introduction to the grammar and syntax of modern spoken and written Korean. Credit will be granted for only one of KORN 100 or KORN 102.

  2. KORN_V 101 (3) Basic Korean II

    Continuation of KORN 100. Credit will be granted for only one of KORN 101 or KORN 102. Recommended pre-requisite: KORN 100.

  3. KORN_V 102 (6) Basic Korean

    An introduction to the grammar and syntax of modern spoken and written Korean. As of 2011W, credit will be granted for only one of KORN 100/101 or KORN 102.

  4. KORN_V 104 (6) Basic Korean Grammar

    Emphasis on grammar, writing, and reading. For heritage learners and students with prior background in spoken Korean.

  5. KORN_V 161 (9) Enriched Summer Intensive Beginning

    An integrated language course developing communicative competence in speaking, listening to, reading, and writing modern Korean. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

  6. KORN_V 200 (6) Intermediate Korean

    Reading and writing of modern colloquial Korean at an intermediate level. As of 2011W, credit will be granted for only one of KORN 201/202 or KORN 200. Recommended pre-requisites: one of KORN 101, KORN 102.

  7. KORN_V 201 (3) Intermediate Korean I

    Reading and writing of modern colloquial Korean at an intermediate level. Credit will be granted for only one of KORN 201 or KORN 200. Recommended pre-requisite: KORN 101.

  8. KORN_V 202 (3) Intermediate Korean II

    Continuation of KORN 201. Credit will be granted for only one of KORN 202 or KORN 200. Recommended pre-requisite: KORN 201.

  9. KORN_V 300 (6) Readings in Korean Topics

    Readings in intermediate-level Korean on aspects of Korean culture, customs, and contemporary life, along with structured conversations based on those readings. As of 2011W, credit will be granted for only one of KORN 301/302 or KORN 300. Recommended pre-requisites: one of KORN 200, KORN 202.

  10. KORN_V 301 (3) Readings in Korean Topics I

    Readings in intermediate-level Korean on aspects of Korean culture, customs, and contemporary life, along with structured conversations based on those readings. As of 2011W, credit will be granted for only one of KORN 301/302 or KORN 300. Recommended pre-requisite: KORN 202 or permission of instructor.

  11. KORN_V 302 (3) Readings in Korean Topics II

    Continuation of KORN 301. As of 2011W, credit will be granted for only one of KORN 301/302 or KORN 300. Recommended pre-requisite: KORN 301 or permission of instructor.

  12. KORN_V 351 (3) Introduction to Hancha: Sinographs and Sino-Korean Vocabulary I

    Chinese characters in their Korean pronunciations and shapes. Students learn approximately 250 sinographs, related sinographic vocabulary, and do structured readings in mixed scripts on aspects of Korean culture and contemporary life. Prerequisite: One of KORN 200, KORN 202. or placement approval. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

  13. KORN_V 352 (3) Introduction to Hancha: Sinographs and Sino-Korean Vocabulary II

    Continuation of KORN 351. Students learn an additional 250 sinographs and related sinographic vocabulary. Prerequisite: KORN 351. or placement approval. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

  14. KORN_V 410 (3-6) Modern Korean Short Fiction

    Reading and translating twentieth-century Korean short fiction. Recommended pre-requisites: either (a) KORN 300 or (b) all of KORN 301, KORN 302.

  15. KORN_V 411 (3-6) Advanced Readings in Korean Non-Fiction

    Guided readings on contemporary affairs from the Korean press and/or selected readings in Korean academic prose. Recommended pre-requisite: KORN 300.

  16. KORN_V 412 (3-6) Korean-to-English Translation

    Translation into English of Korean writing in various literary genres, including short story, poetry, personal essay, and academic essay. Supplementary readings in translation studies and translation theory.

  17. KORN_V 415 (3-6) Korean Conversation and Composition

    Structured conversation practice and weekly composition assignments based on viewing one designated Korean television program per week. Recommended pre-requisite: KORN 300.

  18. KORN_V 420 (3) Readings in Middle and Early Modern Korean

    History and structure of the Korean language through targeted close readings in different editions of an illustrated text from the 15th and 18th centuries. Prerequisite: Non-heritage speakers should have completed KORN 410 or be taking it concurrently. Heritage and native speakers of Korean welcome.

  19. KORN_V 440 (3-12) Supervised Study in the Korean Language

    Seminar in Korean-to-English literary translation. Primarily for, but not limited to, students in Asian Studies and Linguistics. Recommended pre-requisite: KORN 410 or placement exam.
